SPRINGFIELD – Senator Martin A. Sandoval (D-Chicago) issued the following statement Thursday following the United States Supreme Court’s decision to bar a question about citizenship from the 2020 census:
“It’s been clear from the start that a citizenship question is a blatant attempt to diminish the political power of immigrant and Latino communities. An accurate count means accurate representation in government, and if this question is allowed on the 2020 census, many of the communities I represent be left without a voice.
“Today’s decision is a major win against yet another racist policy the Trump administration developed to further divide our nation, and, as the son of immigrants myself, I’m committed to continuing to fight against these policies and protecting those who come to Illinois in search of a better life.”
